John Smillie Architects is based in central Durban, South Africa, and is committed to creating appropriate solutions of enduring quality by engaging with our clients to understand their needs. We also believe in effective communication and take pride in producing quality drawings in both the design and construction phases, using state-of-the-art computer technology.
John qualified with a B.Arch. in 1985 from the University of Kwazulu-Natal.
From 1985 to 2000 he worked for Seitter Boyd architects, and became a partner in 1993.
He gained extensive experience in various project types during this time, in the residential, educational, hotel & leisure, commercial, and industrial sectors.
In 2000, he started John Smillie Architects.
John has been actively involved in Gordon Road Girls’ school over the years, as a member of the Board of Governors from 2000 to 2006, and the Gordon Road Girls’ School Educational Trust from 2007 to 2024.
He is married with two adult children, and his hobbies include playing guitar and drums, squash and fly-fishing.
